Karnataka Launches AI Training While Building New University

Karnataka is solving two problems at once: training people for AI jobs today while creating a world-class university for tomorrow.

The Indian state, home to tech hub Bengaluru, held its first planning meeting in September for the Karnataka Artificial Intelligence University. But rather than waiting years for the campus to take shape, officials are launching training programs right now.

Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan will lead the effort alongside state government officials. His team plans to roll out certificate programs, executive education courses, and reskilling training through partnerships between tech companies and existing schools.

The training will cover everything from generative AI and cybersecurity to data analytics and semiconductor applications. Students, working professionals, rural youth, and career changers can all participate.

Gopalakrishnan says the immediate goal is connecting what already exists. "Our immediate task is to map the training programmes and expertise already available with industry, the infrastructure available across academic institutions, and bring these capabilities together to create meaningful skilling opportunities," he explained.

Karnataka already has educational facilities and AI labs across the state that can start training people beyond just Bengaluru. Tech companies will provide instructors, mentors, real-world projects, and industry-recognized certifications.

The Ripple Effect

The state isn't just counting how many people complete training. Officials plan to measure success by tracking actual jobs created, new businesses launched, and economic opportunities that emerge from the program.

This approach could serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges. By using existing resources while building for the future, Karnataka avoids the common trap of planning endlessly without action.

The committee is also exploring partnerships with universities in India and abroad, including paths to advanced research degrees. The full university will eventually offer continuing education, conduct advanced AI research, and tackle real-world problems through industry collaboration.

State officials are building the framework to coordinate between companies and schools while the legislative process for officially establishing the university moves forward. The next planning phase will map out the complete roadmap for training, research, partnerships, and long-term development.

Karnataka is betting that starting small and scaling up beats waiting for perfect conditions that may never arrive.
