Kaua'i Rescuers Save Injured Hiker From Kalalau Trail

When a 27-year-old New York visitor twisted his ankle on Kaua'i's rugged Kalalau Trail Friday morning, a skilled rescue team turned what could have been a dangerous situation into a textbook save.

The Kaua'i Fire Department's Air 1 helicopter responded at 8:40 a.m. to the call along the famous Nā Pali Coast. The 11-mile Kalalau Trail is known for its stunning ocean views and challenging terrain that tests even experienced hikers.

Rescue 3 personnel aboard the helicopter landed at Kalalau Beach and quickly located the injured hiker. After assessing his condition on site, they carefully loaded him into the aircraft for transport to Princeville Airport.

The coordination didn't stop there. Hanalei Fire Station crews and American Medical Response personnel were waiting at the airport to continue care. The hiker was then taken to a local hospital for treatment.
