Kazakhstan Plants 36M Trees to Fight Desertification

Kazakhstan is turning the tide against desertification with a massive tree-planting campaign that could reshape its environmental future.

The country plans to plant 36 million seedlings across Eastern Kazakhstan, paired with 90 new communication towers to monitor remote forest areas. The initiative targets regions damaged by fires, deforestation, and natural tree aging.

The announcement comes from Daniyar Kanatbaev, head of the Forestry Department for Eastern Kazakhstan's Natural Resources Directorate. He says the project will expand forest cover and strengthen natural ecosystems in a country where forests cover just 11% of the land.

This regional effort fits into an even bigger picture. In 2021, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev set an ambitious national target of planting 2 billion trees by 2027.

The country has already made serious progress. Between 2021 and 2024, Kazakhstan planted 1.15 billion seedlings using 251 forest nurseries that produce over 280 million seedlings annually.
