Kazakhstan Wins First Winter Gold in 32 Years

In one of the most dramatic Olympic figure skating finals ever seen, Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan delivered a clean performance while the world's best skaters fell around him, securing his country's first Winter Olympic gold medal since 1994.

The 21-year-old entered the Milano Ice Skating Arena trailing heavily in the competition. But when the pressure mounted during the men's free skate, Shaidorov was the only athlete in the final group of six to skate without falling.

American Ilia Malinin, nicknamed the "Quad God" and heavily favored to win, fell twice during his routine and finished eighth. Japan's Yuma Kagiyama fell on a quad flip and took silver, while his teammate Shun Sato earned bronze.

Shaidorov kept his head when it mattered most. After a slight slip on his quad lutz, he completed two flawless quad techniques and maintained his composure through the end of his program.

When his scores appeared on the board, Shaidorov looked stunned. Kazakhstan hadn't won Winter Olympic gold since cross-country skier Vladimir Smirnov's victory at the 1994 Lillehammer Games, 10 years before Shaidorov was even born.

The performance represented a complete reversal of expectations. Shaidorov had entered the free skate 16 points behind Malinin, who had dominated figure skating for two and a half years without losing a competition.
