Kenya Boosts Lake Victoria Security to Protect Fishers

Millions of people who depend on Lake Victoria for their livelihoods just got a major boost in security and support from the Kenyan government.

Kenya has ramped up its coast guard presence along Africa's largest freshwater lake to crack down on smuggling while protecting the fishing communities that call its shores home. The government is nearing completion of an ambitious upgrade to its Kenya Coast Guard Service facilities in Kisumu, with the project now 80% finished.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen met with coast guard leadership to review progress on the initiative. The upgraded facilities will strengthen patrol operations, improve working conditions for officers, and enhance rapid response capabilities across the massive lake.

Kenya Shipyard Ltd has already rehabilitated three additional patrol boats, giving authorities better tools to monitor the waters and respond quickly to emergencies. The boats represent a crucial investment in both law enforcement and community safety.

Director General Bruno Shioso emphasized that the improvements will directly benefit officer welfare while boosting their ability to protect local communities. The coast guard is working closely with Beach Management Units and other local stakeholders to improve information sharing and ensure safer conditions for fishers.
