Kerala Launches 'Brand Keralam' to Boost Handloom Weavers
India's Kerala state is creating a premium brand to help traditional handloom weavers reach global markets. While local artisans want more immediate support, many see the initiative as a promising step forward.
Kerala's government is launching a new marketing initiative that could transform how traditional handloom weavers sell their products to the world.
The "Brand Keralam" program, announced in the state's revised budget, will create premium branding and quality standards for Kerala's handloom textiles alongside other traditional products like spices and Ayurvedic formulations. The initiative aims to help artisans bypass middlemen and connect directly with international customers.
P. Chandrasekharan, who runs a handloom unit with 25 workers in Thrissur's Kuthampully region, welcomed the news. "It should help us export more products directly without middlemen," he said.
The budget also promises income support schemes for traditional industries and special incentives for creating digital platforms to market handloom and handicraft products globally. Modern machinery and improved working conditions are part of the package.
The announcement comes as Kerala's handloom sector faces what the government calls "severe challenges." Many weavers worry that Brand Keralam alone won't address their immediate needs for working capital and production support.
The Bright Side
Despite concerns about day-to-day survival, veteran weavers see potential in the branding effort. T.S. Baby, a weaver from Chendamangalam and member of the State Kaithari Council, said the program "sounds good" even while hoping for details on implementation.
Babu A.V., general secretary of the Kerala State Handloom Weavers Cooperative Societies Association, expressed optimism about market opportunities. "We have been hoping that the new government would expand production incentive schemes," he said, adding that improved market interest in traditional handloom products could make Brand Keralam successful.
The initiative represents Kerala's bet that premium branding can help preserve ancient weaving traditions while creating sustainable livelihoods. For thousands of weavers across the state, it offers a path forward that honors their craft while adapting to modern markets.
If Brand Keralam delivers on its promise, Kerala's handloom artisans could soon see their work valued on the global stage.
