Kia Becomes #2 EV Seller in Korea, Outsells Hyundai

🤯 Mind Blown

For the first time in 28 years, Kia has outsold its parent company Hyundai in Korea, powered by a surge in electric vehicle demand. The automaker's lineup of seven EVs is proving that betting big on electric works.

Kia just pulled off something remarkable in its home market: outselling Hyundai for the first time since 1998, driven almost entirely by electric vehicle sales.

The Korean automaker sold over 13,500 EVs in April 2026 alone in Korea. That's more than double what Hyundai managed, and it marks the third straight month Kia has crossed the 10,000 EV threshold in a single month.

Three models led the charge. The compact EV3 SUV sold nearly 4,000 units, while the larger EV5 moved over 2,200 vehicles, and the new PV5 electric van found 3,300 buyers who needed a practical work vehicle that happens to run on electricity.

What makes Kia's success story even more impressive is how quietly it happened. While other automakers scaled back EV plans, Kia built out a complete lineup: seven electric models ranging from the tiny EV2 city car to the three row EV9 SUV to the commercial PV5 van.

The strategy is paying off globally. In the UK, Kia just celebrated selling its 100,000th electric vehicle since 2014, with the EV3 becoming the third best selling EV in its first year. In Australia, Kia ranks as the third largest EV brand behind only Tesla and BYD.

Even in the United States, where Kia has focused more on hybrids, the EV9 saw sales jump 481% in April. Through the first four months of 2026, American buyers purchased more EV9s than during the same period last year, despite policy uncertainty around electric vehicles.

The Ripple Effect

Kia's success shows what happens when an automaker commits fully to electric instead of hedging its bets. By offering vehicles at multiple price points for different needs, Kia made it easier for buyers to find an EV that fits their life.

The impact extends beyond sales numbers. In Korea, Kia and Tesla are now the only brands selling over 10,000 EVs monthly, proving consumer demand exists when the right products arrive. Combined with Hyundai, the two Korean brands delivered nearly 18,500 electric vehicles in April alone in their home market.

Americans will soon get their chance with the EV3, arriving later this year starting around $35,000. The compact SUV offers up to 320 miles of range in long range form and can charge from 10% to 80% in just 31 minutes, bringing many of the features from the larger EV9 to a more affordable package.

For buyers not wanting to wait, Kia is offering up to $15,000 in combined discounts on current EV6 and EV9 models.

Sometimes the dark horse wins by simply showing up prepared while everyone else is still deciding whether to race.
