The base Light model comes with front-wheel drive and an impressive 221 miles of range. That's enough for a week of commuting or a solid road trip without hunting for charging stations.

Step up to the Wind or Land trims with the extended-range battery, and you'll get an EPA-rated 321 miles on a single charge. That matches or beats many gas-powered SUVs in terms of how far you can drive between fill-ups.

All-wheel drive models offer 280 miles of range, perfect for families in snowy climates who need extra traction. The top GT trim tops out at $47,385, still competitive with similarly equipped gas crossovers.

Charging won't keep you waiting either. Despite using a 400-volt system instead of the faster 800-volt architecture in pricier EVs, the EV3 charges from 10 to 80 percent in just 29 minutes for the standard battery. The larger battery needs only 31 minutes.

The Ripple Effect

The EV3's arrival signals something bigger than one affordable car. Ford just announced its Fathom EV pickup at $29,945. GM brought back the beloved Bolt at $28,995. Startup Slate launched an electric pickup at $26,400.
