Kids Save Turtle, Race to Police for Help

A group of children riding bikes near a Monona, Wisconsin pool became unlikely heroes when they discovered a turtle trapped on its back at the bottom of a storm drain.

The kids immediately split into two teams. One classmate stayed behind, pouring water on the stranded turtle to keep it cool in the summer heat. Meanwhile, others jumped on their bikes and pedaled straight to the police station to alert authorities.

Kaylee Herfell, whose daughter was among the young rescuers, watched as the children took charge of the situation. Their quick thinking on a Friday afternoon turned what could have been a tragedy into a successful rescue mission.

The Monona Fire Department responded to the call and arrived at the scene. A firefighter carefully removed the turtle from the drain and carried it to safety, releasing it into a nearby pond where it belonged.
