Kitten Gets Hot Wheels Wheelchair, Finds Perfect Home

When Hope Hollandsworth saw a photo of a kitten rolling around in a wheelchair made from Hot Wheels cars, she knew he belonged with her family.

Gelato arrived at Cincinnati Animal Care this summer as a stray with a lower-back injury that left his hind legs paralyzed. The tiny kitten was too small for the shelter's standard wheelchairs, so staff got creative with what they had on hand.

Using toy cars and wooden rulers, employees built Gelato a custom wheelchair that gave him the freedom to explore and play. The makeshift mobility device worked perfectly for the palm-sized kitten while he waited for his forever home.

Hollandsworth, a 28-year-old tattoo artist, felt an instant connection to Gelato. She already cares for two cats with spinal injuries: Bread Crumb, age 1, and Sprinkles, about 5 months old. Both cats can only use their front legs.

"He was just so cute," Hollandsworth said when she first saw Gelato's photo. She wanted her cats to have "an additional cuddle buddy" who understood their unique challenges.

Sunny's Take

The match feels almost meant to be. While many adopters might hesitate to take on a cat with special needs, Hollandsworth has already built her home around accommodating cats with mobility challenges. She understands the extra care, the adapted spaces, and the unconditional love these animals offer in return.

On Monday afternoon, Hollandsworth met Gelato at the shelter and took him home. The 5-month-old kitten now uses a more traditional wheelchair designed for his size. His first night in his new home, he slept peacefully in Hollandsworth's arms.

Gelato will continue physical therapy with hopes of regaining use of his back legs. His new mom remains optimistic but grounded in her love for him.

"Either way he'll be perfect to me," Hollandsworth said.
