Knights of Columbus Give 50 Winter Coats to Manitoba Kids

✨ Faith Restored

Children in Brandon's Spanish-speaking community received brand-new winter coats from the Knights of Columbus, many of them newcomers to Canada facing their first prairie winter. The donation marks the launch of a new Spanish-language council bringing Catholic charity to Manitoba's growing Hispanic community.

About 50 children walked out of St. Hedwig Catholic Church on Sunday with something more than warmth: they left with dignity, wrapped in brand-new winter jackets donated by the Knights of Columbus.

The coat giveaway at the Brandon parish served two purposes. It protected kids from Manitoba's brutal winter cold, and it celebrated the formation of the first Spanish Knights of Columbus council in the area.

Pastor Philip Malayil watched 25 to 30 children from catechism classes receive their jackets. Many families are newcomers to Canada, experiencing their first Canadian winter without proper gear.

"They are very excited, not only the kids, even the parents," said Cleo Castillo of Knights of Columbus Manitoba. "We welcome them with dignity and compassion."

The timing couldn't be better. The Spanish council had been in development for several years, as organizers recognized a growing Catholic Hispanic community in Brandon. Approximately 25 to 30 men joined the new council during initiation ceremonies held the same weekend.

Alberto Godoy, a parish member who championed the Spanish council's creation, sees the coat donation as just the beginning. The Knights of Columbus built its reputation on protecting families and serving communities, a mission founded by Father Michael McGivney in the United States over a century ago.

"This is just the first activity. There will be more focused on our community," Godoy said.

Sunny's Take

What makes this story special isn't just the coats. It's watching a community figure out how to care for its newest members. The Hispanic families at St. Hedwig are learning about an organization that didn't exist in their home countries. And that organization is learning how to serve in new languages and new ways.

The Knights brought jackets from Winnipeg, but they're building something bigger: a support network where Spanish-speaking families can help each other navigate life in a new country. When winter temperatures drop to dangerous levels, having warm clothes matters. Having a community that sees you and cares about your kids? That matters even more.

For children like Mario Zelaya, who posed for photos with his father after receiving his coat, the jacket solves an immediate problem. But the welcome it represents could last a lifetime.
