Kolkata Driver Feeds 800,000+ Hospital Families for Free

Partha Kar Choudhary starts his second shift when most people head to bed. From 7 PM to 2 AM, the Kolkata car driver arrives at government hospitals with containers of dal, rice, and sabzi for families keeping vigil.

He's been doing this every night for eight years. In that time, he's fed more than 800,000 people.

The mission started small in his own kitchen. Partha began by preparing 30 packets of muri (puffed rice) to hand out to worried families camped outside hospital wards. He quickly realized these people weren't just skipping a meal but going days without proper food while caring for sick relatives.

"My body gets tired, but when I see someone helpless in a hospital, I forget everything," Partha says. Despite financial struggles and exhausting hours, he refuses to stop.

Most families outside government hospitals in India face an impossible choice. Stay with their loved one or leave to find food. Many sleep on sidewalks and hallways, afraid to miss updates from doctors.

Partha removes that worry. His hot meals mean caregivers can focus entirely on their patients without hunger adding to their stress.

The Ripple Effect

Partha's work creates waves beyond full stomachs. When families receive unexpected kindness during their darkest hours, they remember that strangers can be good. Some recipients have returned months later to volunteer with him, wanting to pass forward the compassion they received.

His story has inspired others in Kolkata to start similar efforts at different hospitals. What began as one man's kitchen project has sparked a network of care across the city.

Partha drives during the day to fund his nightly mission. He uses his earnings to buy ingredients, cook meals, and transport food across Kolkata. Friends and neighbors occasionally donate supplies, but he never asks for help.

The families call him "Hospital Man," a nickname that's spread through Kolkata's medical community. Patients' relatives now tell each other to look for the man with the food containers after dark.
