Korean Drug Deal: $2.3B Obesity Treatment Saves Muscle

Hanmi Pharmaceutical landed a record-breaking $2.3 billion deal with Genentech, marking South Korea's largest pharmaceutical technology export ever for a single drug candidate.

The Seoul-based company announced the agreement on August 24th for HM17321, an experimental obesity and diabetes treatment that works differently than current market leaders. While popular GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic help people shed pounds, they often reduce muscle mass along with fat.

Hanmi's approach targets weight loss while preserving lean body mass. The distinction matters because losing muscle during weight loss can leave people weaker and more prone to regaining weight later.

Genentech, owned by pharmaceutical giant Roche Group, paid $190 million upfront for worldwide rights to develop and sell the drug everywhere except South Korea. That upfront payment alone represents roughly 8% of the total contract value, unusually high for a treatment still in early Phase 1 clinical trials.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved human testing last November, and trials are currently underway. Animal studies showed promising results for both weight loss and improved body composition, though researchers stress that muscle preservation effects haven't been confirmed in humans yet.

Genentech will take over development from Phase 2 trials onward, bringing deep pockets and global reach to accelerate the drug's path to market. Beyond the upfront payment and milestone bonuses totaling $2.3 billion, Hanmi will receive ongoing royalties once the drug launches commercially.
