Kristi Yamaguchi: First Asian American Winter Gold Winner

Before social media tracked every record in real time, Kristi Yamaguchi made history without even knowing it.

The figure skater was just 20 years old when she won gold in women's singles at the 1992 Winter Olympics. She became the first Asian American to win a Winter Olympic gold medal and the first American woman to claim the title since 1976.

But Kristi didn't learn about her groundbreaking achievement until years later. "I didn't know I was the first Asian American to win a winter gold," she recalls. "It probably was maybe years later when someone brought it up."

The pressure she avoided might have been a blessing. Right before she stepped onto the ice, fellow figure skater Brian Boitano sent her a telegram with advice that changed everything.

"He said 'Soak it all in. This is a rare moment that comes very few times in a lifetime. And no matter what happens, you're a champion,'" Kristi remembered. That message at exactly the right moment gave her the freedom to just compete.

Her pre-competition routine was uniquely her own. She pumped herself up with Bryan Adams' "There Will Never Be Another Tonight." After competitions, while other athletes craved fancy meals, she reached for chicken wings.

The Ripple Effect

Today, Kristi watches young Asian American athletes like Alysa Liu with special pride. "I always feel like I'm looking out and cheering for fellow Asian Americans in all sports," she said.

Her pioneering win opened doors she didn't even know were closed. Young girls who watched her compete in 1992 grew up seeing what a champion looks like.

Kristi recognizes how far women's sports has come since her competitive days. "It's a constant fight to have equal funding, equal opportunity, equal access to technology and equipment," she explained. "It's come leaps and bounds in amazing ways, but there's still some ways to go."

She stays connected to pop culture through her two daughters. Her pump-up song of choice today? "APT" by Bruno Mars and Rosé.

The legend who once received telegrams before her biggest moment now watches a new generation make their own history, knowing exactly what pressure they face and how far their wins will reach.
