KZN Nursing College Wins Approval for Bachelor's Degree

Nurses in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province just got a major career boost that will help more people access specialized healthcare.

The KZN College of Nursing received approval from the South African Qualifications Authority to offer a Bachelor of Nursing degree at the highest undergraduate level. The qualification carries 480 credits and puts graduates on equal footing with university nursing programs.

Previously, nurses had to complete lower-level qualifications first, then work their way up the academic ladder before accessing specialist training. Now they can graduate with the credentials needed to move directly into postgraduate programs and specialized fields like nephrology, cardiology, or emergency care.

Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane called it a proud moment for the province's nursing education system. She credited the college's management and staff for building a program strong enough to meet national standards. "We produce nurses who are well equipped to serve our people," Simelane said.

The timing feels especially meaningful. The announcement came during Women's Month in South Africa, celebrating the contributions women make to society. Nursing remains a profession where women make up the majority of practitioners, though Simelane encouraged more men to join the field as well.
