LA Fire Dept Gets 30 Electric Motorcycles for Emergencies

When disaster strikes and roads become parking lots, Los Angeles firefighters now have a game-changing way to reach people who need help.

The Los Angeles Fire Department just rolled out 30 electric motorcycles designed specifically for emergency medical response. These aren't replacements for ambulances, they're something better: fast, nimble units that can get paramedics to patients when traditional vehicles can't.

"When access is limited, timing is critical," LAFD Chief Jamie Moore told CBS. "In our line of work, time is not just important, it's everything."

Each motorcycle operates with a two-person team, creating compact medical crews that can slice through gridlocked traffic or navigate earthquake-damaged roads. Once they arrive, the teams can start basic medical care, assess dangers, and coordinate ambulance transport if needed.

Google and YouTube donated the entire fleet of ERidePro motorcycles. But calling them electric dirt bikes would miss the point entirely.

"These aren't patrol bikes, they are mobile medical units assigned to our disaster response section and fully integrated into our dispatch and command system," Moore explained. That integration means the motorcycles work seamlessly with the department's existing emergency response infrastructure.

The bikes serve double duty beyond patient care. In large-scale emergencies like earthquakes, they can weave through blocked streets to locate victims and relay critical information back to command centers in real time.

Los Angeles faces unique emergency challenges with its sprawling geography, heavy traffic, and earthquake risk. These motorcycles address all three at once.

The bikes will also play a major role in search operations during wildfires and other disasters. Their ability to cover rough terrain quickly means emergency crews can assess situations and find victims faster during those crucial first minutes.

This approach to emergency response reflects a growing trend: smaller, electric vehicles filling gaps that traditional equipment can't. Fire engines and ambulances remain essential, but adding these agile motorcycles means help can arrive sooner in situations where every second counts.

For a city that knows disaster too well, 30 electric motorcycles represent 30 new ways to save lives when it matters most.
