LA Firefighters Save Man Stranded in River After Midnight

When a man became stranded on an island in the Los Angeles River in the middle of the night, firefighters didn't hesitate to launch a helicopter rescue that would save his life.

The Los Angeles Fire Department's Air Operations team received the call at 1:39 a.m. Wednesday near Elysian Valley. A 56-year-old man was trapped on a small island in the river with no way to reach safety on his own.

Firefighters arrived quickly at the location near 2274 N. Duvall Street and assessed the situation. The swift water and darkness made a traditional rescue impossible, so they deployed their helicopter for a hoist operation.

The aerial team successfully lifted the man from his isolated position and brought him to solid ground. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment of hypothermia symptoms, a common danger when exposed to cold water and nighttime temperatures.
