LA Triplets Weigh 19 Pounds, Born on Dad's Birthday

Nyla Craft and Marco Bernal got the ultimate birthday surprise when their triplets arrived on August 18, the same day their father turned another year older.

Elio, Elias and Enzo each weighed more than six pounds at birth, bringing their combined weight to 19.3 pounds. That's remarkable considering most triplets are born significantly smaller due to sharing space in the womb.

Two of the three brothers are identical twins, adding another layer of wonder to an already extraordinary delivery at Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center. The babies came close to record territory, though the family's focus was never on breaking records.

"When I heard the first baby come out, I cried because I was just, 'oh my gosh, he's okay,'" Craft told CBS Los Angeles. "Then the second one, then the third one, and I was just like, I heard them all crying at once, and I was like, 'oh thank God, they are good.'"

The triplets joined two older siblings at home, creating a household of seven with five children under the age of five. That's a full house by any measure, but Craft and Bernal are embracing the beautiful chaos.

Dr. Rohit Passi, chief of neonatology at the hospital, visited the family after they brought the babies home. His joy was evident as he celebrated the successful delivery with the new parents.

"We're just so happy, this is the best part, seeing them out and sitting with the family and this is the reason we do what we do," Passi said.
