Lab and Power Company Partner to Modernize U.S. Grid

S&C Electric Company and Argonne National Laboratory just formalized a new research agreement to fast-track innovations that make America's power grid stronger, smarter, and more resilient. The collaboration brings together Argonne's cutting-edge scientific research with S&C's century of experience building equipment that keeps the lights on.

The timing couldn't be better. The electric grid was designed decades ago for a different world. Today it faces mounting pressure from growing electricity demand, aging infrastructure, and increasingly severe weather events that knock out power for millions.

"The electric grid needs to evolve to accommodate the growing and shifting demands," said Ernst Scholtz, Chief Technology Officer at S&C. The partnership creates a pathway to move promising innovations from the laboratory into real technologies that utilities can actually use.

One project already underway shows how this works. The teams are developing advanced ceramic-polymer materials that can handle higher temperatures and electrical stress in grid equipment. If successful, these materials could make transformers and other critical components last longer and perform better under tough conditions.

Monica Neukomm, who directs Argonne's Electric Grid Program, explains that meeting modern demands requires close collaboration between industry and research institutions. The new framework allows them to tackle multiple challenges at once, from grid modernization to supporting electrification efforts.
