Lagos Airport Gets Monorail to Connect City Rail Line
Nigeria's busiest airport is getting a modern monorail connection that will whisk travelers from the city's railway station directly to their terminals. The five-stop system will offer commuters a fast alternative to Lagos's notoriously congested roads.
Getting to Lagos's international airport is about to get a whole lot easier for millions of travelers.
Nigeria's Minister of Aviation has approved the final design for a monorail that will connect Murtala Muhammed International Airport directly to the city's Red Line railway terminus in Ikeja. The system promises to transform how people reach one of West Africa's busiest travel hubs.
The approved design includes five stations along the route, linking Ikeja Railway Station to the airport's Terminal 1, which is currently being rebuilt. Travelers will pass through stops at the Domestic Airport, Beesam, and Toll Gate before reaching the international terminal.
Minister Festus Keyamo announced the approval after meeting with airport officials and engineering teams on Tuesday. The monorail will integrate seamlessly with Lagos State's expanding rail network, creating a unified transportation system across the city.
Anyone who has battled Lagos traffic knows why this matters. The city's roads are infamous for gridlock that can turn a short trip into an hours-long ordeal, with travelers sometimes missing flights despite leaving home with plenty of time to spare.

The rail connection builds on momentum from Lagos's Red Line, which already serves commuters across the city. Extending that system into the airport complex represents a collaboration between federal and state governments, both working to modernize transportation infrastructure.
The Ripple Effect
This project goes beyond convenience for air travelers. Airport workers, tourism industry employees, and local businesses stand to benefit from improved accessibility and reduced commute times.
The monorail also signals a broader shift in Nigerian infrastructure planning toward sustainable, efficient public transit. As Lagos continues growing into one of Africa's megacities, integrated rail systems offer a blueprint for managing urban congestion.
Airport Managing Director Olubomi Onabanjo-Kuku confirmed in mid-October that financing discussions for the rail link have reached advanced stages. The project will eventually connect all three airport terminals to the city's rail network.
Construction timelines have not been announced yet, and international flights continue operating through temporary facilities while Terminal 1 undergoes reconstruction. But the design approval marks a concrete step forward after years of planning.
For Lagos residents and the millions who pass through the airport annually, the monorail represents more than just another transit option. It's a tangible investment in making travel less stressful and cities more livable.
