Lagos Airport Launches Recycling, Upgrades Pilgrim Terminal

Travelers passing through Lagos's Murtala Muhammed International Airport will now see something new: bright, color-coded recycling bins designed to make waste separation simple and sustainable.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria unveiled the first phase of its nationwide Sustainable Waste Management Programme this week, alongside a fully upgraded Pilgrims' Terminal that now rivals modern international facilities. Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo led the inauguration, calling the initiatives part of Nigeria's commitment to better service and environmental responsibility.

The recycling program introduces designated bins throughout the airport, encouraging passengers to sort waste properly. It's the starting point for a rollout planned across all Nigerian airports, aiming to reduce pollution and improve sanitation standards at one of Africa's busiest aviation hubs.

Meanwhile, the upgraded Pilgrims' Terminal received a complete transformation. The facility now offers 300 comfortable seats in the waiting area, modern VIP lounges, free high-speed Wi-Fi, and a fully air-conditioned mosque. Enhanced security screening systems promise faster, safer processing during peak travel seasons when thousands of Muslims depart for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia.
