Lagos Guard Returns $9,100 to Bank Customer

When Adebanjo Samuel spotted $9,100 left behind at his Lagos bank branch, he didn't hesitate to do what his parents taught him: return it immediately.

The security guard was on duty at First City Monument Bank in Marina on May 25 when he discovered the substantial sum. Without a second thought, he tracked down the customer and handed back the money.

His employer, Proton Security Service Limited, announced the story publicly in June, calling Samuel "a true hero" whose actions reflect the best of Nigeria's security profession. The company is planning a special ceremony at its headquarters to formally honor him.

"It is not about the amount; it is about the principle," Samuel said. "I was raised to be truthful and to do what is right irrespective of the circumstances."

Samuel's choice becomes even more meaningful in context. The amount he returned represents significant money in Nigeria, yet he never considered keeping it.

Proton Security's Managing Director Odebunmi Adekunmi praised Samuel's decision as validation of the company's training and ethical standards. "Professionalism extends beyond carrying out assigned duties; it also involves making the right decisions when no one is watching," Adekunmi said.
