Lagos Kids in Makoko Celebrate Dreams on Children's Day

Laughter filled the air in Makoko, Lagos, as over 100 children celebrated their dreams and potential on Children's Day this June. The Daniel Ogechi Akujobi Memorial Foundation brought the party to Mount Zion Nursery and Primary School, making sure kids in this waterfront community knew they matter.

Makoko is often called the world's largest floating slum, and its children don't always get to celebrate like other kids. That's exactly why the foundation chose this community for their Children's Day event.

"We wanted these children to know that they are not forgotten," said Bukunmi Osunsina, the Foundation's Senior Programme Officer. The theme for this year's celebration was "Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child."

The foundation brought more than just party vibes. Students received food, clothing, and most importantly, encouragement to dream bigger than their current circumstances.

Catherine Olukotun, the Foundation's Programme Manager, explained that investing in children creates safe spaces where they can thrive. Her team partnered with companies like Sacvin, Chikki Foods, and 7Up Bottling Company to make the celebration possible.

Why This Inspires

This celebration wasn't about charity. It was about dignity and belonging. When children living in challenging conditions receive attention and care, it sends a powerful message: your zip code doesn't determine your worth.

The foundation understands that today's forgotten child could become tomorrow's problem, but today's encouraged child could become tomorrow's leader. Simple acts of inclusion plant seeds of hope that grow into real change.

The smiles on those children's faces proved that sometimes the greatest gift is simply showing up and celebrating someone's existence.
