Lagos Rotary Festival Unites Thousands Through Sports

Hundreds of community volunteers who spend their days helping others just took time to help themselves, and the results are bringing people together across Nigeria's largest city.

Rosfest '26, the third annual Rotary Club Sports Festival, wrapped up Sunday in Lagos with 14 different sporting events ranging from traditional games like ayo olopon to modern competitions like volleyball and cycling. The festival brought together Rotary Club members from across District 9112 for three days of friendly competition and community building.

"For us, sports is a unifier," said District Governor Lanre Adedoyin. "Anytime there is a sports event, we are all united in ensuring the victory of our country."

The competition was fierce but friendly. Rotary Club Victoria Island East took home the football championship, while Rotary Club Shomolu claimed victory in tug-of-war. Revolution Lagos dominated the volleyball court, and individual champions emerged in chess, scrabble, snooker, and track events.

But winning wasn't really the point. Organising committee chairman Alozie Nsirimobi explained that the festival serves a deeper purpose for people who dedicate their time to serving others.

"Rotarians who are busy helping communities and others don't have time to take care of themselves," Nsirimobi said. "We used this for them to have time to exercise and look after themselves."

The Ripple Effect

The festival's impact extends beyond personal wellness. With the theme "Sports for Service," organizers are using athletic competition to model unity and peace for the wider community.

Lukman Olusesi, captain of X-Riders Cycling club from Ijebu Ode, traveled to showcase how his team promotes unity through cycling in their communities. "Rotary is all about making the world a better place, and we are doing that with cycling," he said.

Since its launch in 2023, the festival has grown significantly each year. What started as a simple health initiative has evolved into a powerful demonstration of how competition and cooperation can coexist.

The volunteers who give so much to others are learning that taking care of themselves makes them better equipped to care for their communities.
