Lamar Jackson Embraces Fresh Start With Ravens Coach

Sometimes change arrives exactly when it's needed most, even when nobody sees it coming.

Lamar Jackson spent his first eight NFL seasons with just one head coach, a rare gift in today's league. But when the Baltimore Ravens made the surprising decision to part ways with John Harbaugh after 18 seasons, their superstar quarterback discovered something unexpected: excitement for what's next.

"I can say it's a breath of fresh air because everything is just new," Jackson said after a recent practice. The two-time MVP admitted he was "shocked" when Harbaugh was fired and immediately texted his former coach to wish him well with the New York Giants.

Jackson's respect for Harbaugh runs deep. "Hats off to Coach Harbaugh because he did so much for the city, for the team and for this organization," he said, acknowledging their shared accomplishments while trusting owner Steve Bisciotti made the right call for the team's future.

Now Jackson is building something special with Jesse Minter, who previously served as a Ravens defensive assistant from 2017 to 2020. The Ravens gave Jackson a voice in the hiring process, and Minter and new Offensive Coordinator Declan Doyle flew to Florida to meet with him personally after being hired.

"Man, he's a cool dude. He's a cool coach," Jackson said of Minter. "Every time I come in the building, you're always smiling. You don't know what Coach is thinking about; he just has a smile on his face, and that's great to have."

That positive energy mirrors Jackson's own approach. He brings consistent optimism and fierce competitive drive, making him and Minter a natural match.

Jackson hasn't always attended optional team activities, but this offseason he's been at the facility constantly, diving into the new offensive system and soaking up the fresh atmosphere. His enthusiasm is contagious, and it's already translating to the field, where Minter says Jackson has "done great" with the transition.

The quarterback's willingness to embrace change rather than resist it shows real leadership. After achieving so much with one system, many stars might struggle with starting over, but Jackson sees opportunity where others might see disruption.

"I feel like everything is new right now, but it's cool. The atmosphere is smooth," Jackson said. "I'm just looking forward to the season now."
