Laredo Longhorns End 2-Year Rivalry Drought at Home Tourney

When United High School's volleyball team found themselves tied 1-1 against their biggest rival in the championship match of their own tournament, senior Victoria Luna knew exactly what to say to her teammates.

"This is our house," she told them. "They've been beating us for a while, and we needed to take that crown back."

The Laredo Longhorns delivered on that promise August 29, defeating Alexander High School 25-19, 16-25, 15-12 in front of an electric home crowd. It marked United's first victory over the Bulldogs since August 2024, snapping nearly two years of losses to their northside rival.

The third and final set showcased everything high school sports should be. Players dove for every ball, and each kill seemed more powerful than the last.

Luna led the charge at the net with thunderous spikes that energized both her team and the packed gym. She closed the first set with three straight kills and sealed the championship with a final powerful strike when United led 14-12.

"She's a monster right now," said United coach Lety Longoria about her star player. "She pushes those younger girls to continue and help her out."

The victory felt especially sweet after Alexander swept United in last year's tournament championship. The Bulldogs have dominated the rivalry recently, winning three straight district titles and remaining unbeaten in district play since October 2022.

But these United seniors had different plans for their home court. Luna, along with fellow seniors Ximena Juarez and Camila Santos, refused to let another championship slip away.

"We just told ourselves we've got to keep going," Juarez said. "This is our house, and we have to put our foot down."
