Las Cruces Pet Food Program Aims to Double Aid to 3,000 Bags

When families struggle to afford pet food, they face an impossible choice: feed their beloved animals or surrender them to shelters. In Las Cruces, New Mexico, one veterinary clinic is making sure no one has to make that choice.

The Schumacher Grant distributed more than 1,500 pet food aid bags last year to families in need. Now, Dr. Kyle Schumacher and his team are setting an ambitious goal: 3,000 bags in 2026.

The program started small in 2024 when Schumacher Veterinary Clinic offered free pet vaccinations at Camp Hope. What began as a single vaccination event quickly grew into something bigger when organizers realized how many families needed help keeping their pets healthy and fed.

Today, the program provides dog and cat food aid bags, spay and neuter assistance, and essential veterinary care. The Schumacher Grant has partnered with Casa de Peregrinos and serves clients from La Casa, La Clínica de Familia, La Piñon, and The Salvation Army.

"Last year, people donated pet food, volunteered their time and helped us distribute more than 1,500 bags," Dr. Schumacher said. "I'm grateful for that support."

To double their impact this year, organizers need the community's help. They're asking for pet food donations through their Amazon Wish List and volunteers to help sort supplies, assemble bags, and distribute them to families.

The Ripple Effect

When pets stay with their families, everyone benefits. Animals avoid the trauma of shelter surrender, families keep their companions, and already overcrowded shelters have more space for animals who truly need rescue.

The Schumacher Grant Donor Advised Endowed Fund, housed at the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico, supports animal welfare and access to veterinary care throughout the region. By helping families afford basic pet care, the program prevents heartbreak before it happens.

Volunteer shifts run from 12:30 to 3 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday starting August 11 through October 1 at Casa de Peregrinos on West Amador Avenue. Anyone interested can sign up online to join the effort.
