Las Vegas Rescuers Save Climber Stranded 600 Feet Up

When a rock climber fell 50 feet while scaling a steep Nevada cliff face last Saturday, their destroyed helmet made all the difference between life and death.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police search and rescue teams launched a dramatic seven-hour operation after receiving a call around noon about an injured climber on the Dream Safari route at Dark Shadows Wall in Pine Creek. The climber was stranded roughly 600 feet up the rock face with severe head and back injuries.

While emergency crews mobilized, the victim's climbing partner and a guide from another party reached the injured climber first. They controlled the bleeding and kept the patient stable until professional rescuers arrived.

Four search and rescue officers and a lead climb volunteer were dropped by helicopter several hundred feet above the stranded climber. The team rappelled down the rock face and provided medical treatment while suspended in mid-air, then secured the patient in a titanium litter.

The real challenge came next. Crews built a lowering system and carefully brought the climber down several hundred feet through three separate stations. A rescuer stayed with the patient during the entire descent, monitoring their condition on the vertical rock face.

Once at the base, additional volunteers carried the litter to an extraction point. The helicopter returned to airlift the victim to a Bureau of Land Management helipad, where a ground ambulance waited to transport them to a local hospital.
