Latvia Mall Drive Helps 1,000+ Kids Get Back to School
For the seventh year, Latvian shopping centers are collecting school supplies and donations to help families who can't afford the €100-500 needed for back-to-school costs. The month-long campaign brings together businesses, charities, and everyday shoppers to ensure every child starts the year ready to learn.
When 37% of families have less than €100 to spend on back-to-school supplies but actual costs run up to €500, thousands of Latvian children face September with worry instead of excitement.
That gap is exactly why AKROPOLE shopping centers launched their "Let's Help Prepare for School Together!" campaign seven years ago. Running through August, the drive makes it easy for anyone to help by dropping new notebooks, clothing, shoes, and supplies into donation boxes at two Riga malls.
The need is real and growing. A recent survey of 502 Latvian households with school-age children found that nearly half of families actively hunt for discounts before school starts, while 29% rely on reusing items from previous years just to make ends meet.
But money isn't the only pressure parents face. More than half worry about their child's emotional wellbeing during the transition back to school, while others lose sleep over bullying (28%) and digital safety (23%).

The Ripple Effect
What started as a simple donation drive has grown into a community-wide movement. AKROPOLE partnered with charity organization Ziedot.lv, the Latvian Parents' Organization, and local businesses to create multiple ways to give.
Shoppers can buy supplies at stores inside the malls and drop them directly into collection boxes. Those who prefer can make cashless donations at special stands or transfer funds online through Ziedot.lv's website.
The campaign does more than fill backpacks. It sends a powerful message to children that their community cares about their success. When a child walks into school with new supplies and proper clothing, they walk in with dignity and confidence.
There's encouraging news too. Despite financial stress, 49% of children feel calm about returning to school, showing remarkable resilience. Another 31% experience some anxiety but manage it successfully.
Every donated pencil, every pair of shoes, every euro contributed helps close the gap between what families can afford and what children need to thrive.
