LeBron James, 41, Leads Lakers Past Rockets in Playoff Upset

LeBron James isn't supposed to be doing this anymore, but someone forgot to tell him.

At 41, the NBA's oldest player just led the injury-riddled Los Angeles Lakers to a shocking first-round playoff upset over the Houston Rockets, closing out the series Friday night in Houston. No one in league history has even come close to performing at this level at his age.

The Lakers' season looked finished on April 2nd when both starting guards, Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, went down with injuries during a devastating loss to Oklahoma City. The team's two leading scorers were out indefinitely, and the postseason was just weeks away.

James had a choice: accept defeat or do what he'd done throughout his career. He chose to carry his team one more time.

Vegas gave the Lakers no chance against Houston without their star backcourt. The Rockets were heavily favored, and basketball experts wrote off Los Angeles before the series even started.

But James averaged 23 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and nearly two steals per game across six contests. In a critical Game 3, he hit a miracle three-pointer to force overtime after going on a 10-0 run with his son Bronny, including a jaw-dropping alley-oop from father to son.

The Lakers grabbed a commanding 3-0 series lead and sealed the upset in six games. While trade deadline pickup Luke Kennard essentially won Game 1, veteran Marcus Smart proved invaluable, and center Deandre Ayton dominated the boards, James was undeniably the best player on the floor.

"For them to allow me to lead them, that means a lot to me," James said in the locker room after Game 6. Earlier this season, he'd accepted a reduced role as the team's third option, putting his ego aside for the good of the franchise.

Second-year head coach JJ Redick, who took criticism after a disappointing playoff debut last season, could barely contain his amazement. "For him to do it again, to answer the bell again, it's really baffling in some ways," Redick said, attempting to stifle a grin.

James reflected on the moment back in March when the Lakers were riding high and he was embracing his new supporting role. "As you get older, you appreciate the moment more than anything," he said then. "The only thing that we know for sure is happening is the moment."

The Lakers now face Oklahoma City in the conference semifinals, the same team that seemed to end their season just weeks ago.
