Léon Marchand Wins First European Gold in Paris Pool

The roar inside Paris's Centre Aquatique Olympique reached deafening levels as Léon Marchand touched the wall first, claiming his maiden European Championship gold in the pool where he became an Olympic legend.

The four-time Paris 2024 Olympic champion won the 200m butterfly on Saturday with a commanding time of 1:51.72. He finished more than two seconds ahead of silver medalist Hubert Kós of Hungary, who clocked 1:54.06.

The victory was especially sweet because it nearly didn't happen. Marchand had been nursing a nagging injury that forced him to skip the breaststroke and individual medley events at his home championship.

"When I found out I wasn't going to be able to swim the 400m individual medley, I hesitated about competing at the European Championships," Marchand admitted after the race. He chose to fight through it, and that decision paid off beautifully.

The race itself was a masterclass in patience and power. Kós jumped out to an early lead, beating Marchand by 0.18 seconds at the halfway mark.

But the Frenchman knows how to put on a show for his home crowd. He surged in the final two laps, switching on what he called his "afterburners" to pull away decisively.

"The noise in that pool was incredible," Marchand said. "It was intense, and I got so much energy from the crowd."

Marchand's victory shows the power of showing up even when you're not at your best. The swimming sensation could have sat out the championships entirely to nurse his injury and protect his legacy.

Instead, he chose to compete on a limited program, giving everything he had left to his passionate supporters. The result was a dominant performance that added another chapter to his remarkable story at the iconic Paris venue.

Two years ago in the same pool, Marchand staged a similar comeback to defeat world record holder Kristóf Milák in an Olympic record time of 1:51.21. That Olympic triumph made him a national hero in France.

Saturday's European title proves he's still got the magic, injury and all. The gold medal adds to the 4x200m freestyle relay silver he earned earlier in the week.

"I kept fighting and, in the end, I'm glad I did," Marchand reflected. Sometimes the greatest victories come from simply choosing to compete.
