Lewis Hamilton is rediscovering the joy of racing at age 40, and Formula 1 fans are reaping the rewards.

The seven-time world champion says the sport's new regulations this season have delivered "the best battle I've had" since his legendary duel with Nico Rosberg back in 2014. His recent wheel-to-wheel fight with Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in China kept both drivers trading positions for multiple laps.

"That's how racing should be," Hamilton told reporters ahead of this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix. "It should be back and forth, back and forth."

The new rules split engine power 50-50 between traditional combustion and electric energy. This creates constant energy management that keeps cars closer together throughout races, allowing drivers to pass and repass as their power levels fluctuate at different track sections.

Some have criticized this "yo-yo racing" effect, but Hamilton sees it differently. He compares it to his karting days, when sustained battles were the norm rather than one decisive overtake ending the fight.

"No one ever referred to go-karting as yo-yo racing," he said. "It's the best form of racing, and Formula 1 has not been the best form of racing in a long, long time."

Hamilton acknowledges the new cars aren't perfect. He dislikes aspects of the power deployment system, and qualifying laps require careful energy recovery that reduces the pure driving challenge. But the lighter, more nimble cars can follow closely through high-speed corners without losing grip, something that's been impossible in recent years.

Hamilton's renewed enthusiasm comes after a challenging start to his Ferrari career. Critics questioned whether the 40-year-old still had what it takes to compete at the highest level. His response? Training harder than ever.

Between races, he ran 100 kilometers in Tokyo. "I know that none of the drivers I'm racing against have trained as hard as I have," he said. He credits blocking out negativity and refocusing on his abilities for his improved form.

After two decades in the sport, Hamilton's passion burns as bright as when he started. "I dedicate absolutely everything I have now to this challenge," he said.

Formula 1 is proving that sometimes the best path forward means looking back to what made racing special in the first place: pure, sustained battles between the world's best drivers.
