Lexington Gets $2M Chip Lab, 20 New Tech Jobs

Infineon Technologies is betting big on Kentucky's tech future with a new laboratory that could cement the state's role in the semiconductor revolution.

The German company, which makes the tiny chips that power modern life, will invest more than $2 million in a specialized electrical characterization lab at its Lexington facility. Over the next decade, the expansion will create 20 new jobs paying $35.25 per hour plus benefits.

The new lab will test the voltage, current, and resistance of materials used in semiconductors. Think of it as a high-tech quality control center ensuring the chips perform reliably in everything from electric vehicle powertrains to renewable energy systems.

Infineon's microchips already do remarkable work behind the scenes. They help solar panels and wind turbines capture energy more efficiently. They power the collision avoidance systems that keep drivers safe. They even reduce electricity waste in everyday devices.

The Lexington office is no accident. Its location near the University of Kentucky gives Infineon direct access to graduates trained in this specialized field. The company has made research and development a centerpiece of its Kentucky operations.

Kentucky's advanced manufacturing sector employs more than 30,000 people across Central Kentucky, spanning robotics, automation, and engineering. This investment strengthens that ecosystem at a critical moment when global demand for semiconductors continues to surge.

The state is sweetening the deal with $433,000 in tax incentives through programs designed to attract exactly this kind of high-value work. That includes rebates on research equipment and tax credits tied to job creation.

For automotive and industrial electronics especially, this lab represents a major step forward. As electric vehicles become mainstream and renewable energy expands, the demand for reliable, efficient semiconductors will only grow.
