Lifeguard Dives Into Massive Waves to Save Drowning Boy

When enormous waves suddenly crashed onto a Santa Cruz beach last weekend, one lifeguard didn't hesitate to dive into the chaos to save a drowning child.

The rescue happened at Seabright Beach, about 60 miles south of San Francisco. Witness Scott Vander Dussen was filming when the conditions changed without warning.

"The waves were what you'd expect, a normal cadence and intensity," Vander Dussen told local news. "And then that just changed in a heartbeat."

A young boy was swept into the ocean in seconds. The unidentified lifeguard spotted him struggling and sprinted into the massive surf.

Video captured the lifeguard reaching the boy just as he started going limp. The lifeguard dove under an incoming wave while holding tight to the child, refusing to let go despite the pounding water.

Several adults tried to help but were knocked back by the powerful waves. The lifeguard kept fighting to bring the boy to shore as the ocean pushed against him with each massive swell.

Eventually, another lifeguard joined the rescue. Together, they pulled the boy safely onto the beach.

Paramedics checked the boy at the scene before releasing him to his relieved parents. Both the lifeguard and the child are expected to be fine.
