Livermore Fusion Lab Wins Innovation Award for Clean Energy

The same lab that made history by creating fusion ignition is now being honored for helping turn that scientific achievement into tomorrow's power plants.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's fusion technology institute, known as LIFT, won the 2026 East Bay Innovation Award just one year after opening its doors. The award recognizes the institute's work connecting breakthrough fusion science with real companies trying to build commercial fusion power plants.

LIFT launched in 2025 after scientists at the National Ignition Facility repeatedly achieved fusion ignition, the same reaction that powers the sun and stars. Now the institute serves as a bridge between cutting-edge research and the companies racing to deliver clean fusion energy to homes and businesses.

The recognition came from Livermore's own backyard. Mayor John Marchand nominated LIFT for the Catalyst Category award, which the East Bay Economic Development Alliance presented on March 26.

"This recognition is especially meaningful, coming from our local community," said LIFT Director Tammy Ma. The institute focuses on partnerships with the broader fusion community, with California playing a central role in making fusion energy practical.

The Ripple Effect

LIFT isn't just about celebrating past achievements. The institute is already making waves by helping fusion startups and established companies solve the real-world challenges of building power plants.

Earlier this year, the lab released a new economic model that helps companies figure out whether their fusion plant designs will actually make financial sense. The tool lets them test different approaches before investing billions in construction.

The timing matters because fusion energy offers something no other power source can match: unlimited clean energy with no carbon emissions and minimal waste. Unlike solar and wind, fusion can run 24/7 regardless of weather.

By using powerful lasers to compress and heat tiny fuel pellets, fusion creates the same conditions found in the cores of stars. The National Ignition Facility remains the only place on Earth to demonstrate fusion ignition, proving the concept works.

LIFT now focuses on the hard part: taking laboratory success and turning it into power plants that can keep the lights on in millions of homes. The institute helps companies navigate technical challenges, scale up innovations, and reduce the risks that make investors nervous.
