When DJ AG walked into the Ann Owens Centre in London, he expected to lead a polite singalong session. What he got instead was one of the best crowds of his career.
The entertainer, who has performed alongside Ed Sheeran and Idris Elba, donated his time to host a "day rave" for seniors as part of Age UK Barnet's mission to combat loneliness. The karaoke-style event quickly evolved into an energetic dance party, with a dance tutor guiding participants through moves as everyone sang crowd-pleasing hits.
For 84-year-old Helen, it was a milestone moment. She had never set foot on a dance floor before that afternoon. "It was well worth the wait!" she said afterward.
Lenny, also 84, admitted he wasn't sure what to expect when organizers announced a DJ would be performing and live-streaming the event. "I'm not a natural dancer but they made it easy to feel included," he shared. "It brought back memories of my youth!"
The experience moved him beyond the dance floor. "I always look forward to the events that Age UK Barnet puts on," Lenny added. "They help me enjoy later life so much more than I ever thought I could. I'm incredibly grateful and actually feel positive about the future."

The Ripple Effect
This London dance party represents just one spark in a much larger flame. Age UK received $7 million through a 2024 partnership with Omaze, a sweepstakes company that raffled off a free house. The donation broke Omaze's record as the largest amount ever raised for a charity partner in the company's history.
That funding is now powering something remarkable: over 10 million minutes of friendship, social activities, and practical support to older people across the UK. From dance parties to conversation groups, Age UK's 100 local branches are using the funds to reach isolated seniors in their communities.
"Seeing everyone singing, dancing and joining in together was fantastic," said Hannorah Lee, Age UK's Fundraising Director. Matt Pohlson, Omaze's Founder and CEO, called it "exactly the kind of impact" they hoped to create.
DJ AG summed up the afternoon simply: "I've performed on streets all over the world, but walking into that room was something really special. These guys were right up there with the best crowds I've played to, giving it absolutely everything." He added that he'd happily host these sessions every week if he could.
Sometimes the best medicine for loneliness is a good dance party.
