London Teen Becomes First British NFL Academy Player Drafted

When the phone call finally came after four hours of waiting, Seydou Traore stayed calm. His mum Zaia did not, letting out a celebratory trill and tears of joy that would be watched millions of times online.

The 23-year-old from south London had just become the first graduate of England's NFL Academy to be drafted into professional American football. For context, only 0.08% of the one million American teenagers who play high school football each year make it to the NFL.

Traore found American football at 16 while playing as a goalkeeper for London Warriors. His hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness from soccer translated perfectly to catching and tracking footballs.

In 2019, he joined the first class at the NFL Academy in north London, a program designed to help international players earn scholarships to American colleges. Within a year, he had an offer from a Florida high school, which meant moving 4,500 miles from home.

"I can't afford to come and see you, you'll be there by yourself," his mum told him when he broke the news from the kitchen. Traore wouldn't see his family for five years.

At Clearwater Academy, coach Jesse Chinchar watched videos of a tall athlete making incredible one-handed catches. He had no idea he was watching someone who hadn't even played a full game yet.

"If this kid comes over and it works out, this could change his life," Chinchar thought. He was right.

Traore learned his first playbook in days and immediately dominated against players who had trained their entire lives. His goalkeeping background gave him an edge in tracking high balls and spatial awareness that many American players lacked.

He eventually earned a scholarship to Arkansas State, where coaches saw something special. By draft day, Traore had transformed from a raw London teenager into a 244-pound professional athlete without losing any speed.

His sister Zeinab, who calls him "like my first child," worried about the distance. But Traore kept betting on himself, turning down early college offers because he believed better ones would come.
