Long Island Group Trains 100+ Volunteers to Help Sick Kids

When children face serious illness or loss, volunteers are discovering that simple moments of fun can be powerful medicine.

Kids NEED More recently welcomed volunteers from across Long Island to a two-day Open House and Training Experience in Lindenhurst. The event revealed something surprising: there are far more ways to help sick children than most people realize.

Attendees explored interactive stations showcasing different volunteer opportunities. Some learned about becoming camp counselors at sleepaway programs. Others discovered the Sweet Squad, a team that organizes ice cream socials and family events throughout the year.

"People are often surprised by how many different ways there are to get involved," said Melissa Firmes, Executive Director and Co-Founder. "Whether you love working directly with children, helping behind the scenes, sharing professional skills, supporting special events, or volunteering alongside your family, there is truly a place for everyone."

The Holiday CHEER Bus drew plenty of attention. Each December, volunteers collect gifts and organize special deliveries to ensure children facing illness feel remembered during the holiday season.

Students exploring career paths learned about internships in social work, psychology, and child life. Meanwhile, retirees and business professionals discovered the Ambassador Program, which connects experienced leaders with opportunities to expand the organization's reach.

Virtual Camp and Friday Bingo programs help isolated families stay connected through online games and social activities. Volunteers lead sessions from anywhere, ensuring every family feels part of a supportive community.

The Ripple Effect

For over a decade, Kids NEED More has operated on a simple belief: fun and friendship are forms of healing. When a volunteer shows up to scoop ice cream or lead a camp activity, they're doing more than filling time. They're sending a message to struggling families that they're not alone.

The training weekend gave volunteers practical skills, but it also revealed the deeper truth about service. Each ice cream social, each bingo game, each camp session creates moments where childhood can still feel normal, even amid hospital visits and grief.
