Lost Dog Found After 12 Years, 1,400 Miles from Home

After 12 years of wondering what happened to his beloved husky, a Texas man got the call he never thought he'd receive.

Sierra, a 13-year-old husky, arrived at Hernando County Sheriff's Office Animal Services in Brooksville, Florida on April 8 as a stray. She was thin, missing patches of fur, and moving slowly.

When staff scanned her microchip, they discovered something remarkable. Sierra had an owner who last knew her to be in New Mexico over a decade ago.

The owner, who lives in Midland, Texas, was 1,400 miles away from where Sierra was found. He had never stopped wondering about her fate but never imagined he'd hear from her again.

He was heartbroken when he learned about Sierra's condition. But he was overwhelmed with emotion knowing he'd get a second chance to see his old friend.

For eight days, Sierra received medical treatments, medicated baths, daily walks, and plenty of love from shelter staff and volunteers. They worked to get her healthy enough for the long journey home.

We Rate Dogs, a social media foundation for animals needing special care, coordinated Sierra's trip back to Texas. Best Western provided free overnight hotel stays along the route, and volunteers drove her mile by mile toward home.
