Lost Dog Reunites With Owner After 275-Mile Journey Home

Michael Franklin never stopped hoping to see his dog Burken again, even after more than a year of searching.

Franklin adopted Burken from the Houston SPCA in February 2024. When his beloved companion went missing sometime after, the Houston resident faced the heartbreaking reality that many pet owners know too well: wondering if you'll ever see your furry friend again.

Then on June 5, 2026, Franklin's phone rang with news he'd almost given up on. Companion Animal Alliance in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had found Burken wandering the streets as a stray. The shelter staff scanned the dog during intake and discovered something that would change everything: a registered microchip with Franklin's contact information.

There was just one problem. Franklin didn't have a car to make the 275-mile trip from Houston to Baton Rouge. But after more than a year apart from his dog, nothing was going to stop this reunion.

Working together with CAA staff, Franklin arranged to take a Greyhound bus across state lines. On June 10, he walked into the Louisiana shelter and saw Burken for the first time in over a year.

CAA emphasized what made this happy ending possible: that small microchip implanted under Burken's skin. Collars can slip off during adventures or be removed, but a properly registered microchip stays with a pet forever. Even when an animal ends up hundreds of miles from home and years have passed, that tiny piece of technology can guide them back.

Franklin's determination to reunite with his dog, even without easy transportation, shows the powerful bond between pets and their people. He could have waited or made excuses, but instead he found a way.

Now Burken is back home in Houston, and Franklin has his companion back where he belongs. The long journey is over.
