Lost Hiker Rescued from Neck-Deep Bush in New Zealand

When a routine morning walk goes wrong, sometimes it takes a helicopter crew and GPS tracking to make things right again.

A woman exploring the Piha bush near Auckland became lost in undergrowth so thick it reached her neck. After three hours of struggling through the dense vegetation, she called police for help around 11am, exhausted and disoriented.

The Police Eagle helicopter team arrived quickly and used GPS to pinpoint her location near Marine Parade South. But the aerial view revealed a problem: a recent landslip had wiped out the normal ground access routes.

The crew came up with a creative solution. They dropped a Tactical Flight Officer into a safer section of the bush, then guided him from the air as he trekked through the undergrowth to reach the stranded walker.

Ground crews hiking in from Piha Road eventually met up with the officer and the woman. Together, they navigated safely out of the challenging terrain.

Senior Sergeant Jon Winthrop, Waitematā West Area Response Manager, said the woman was tired but in good spirits when officers returned her home. The rescue showcased the kind of coordination that saves lives when nature throws unexpected challenges at outdoor enthusiasts.

The Bright Side

What could have ended badly became a story of excellent teamwork and problem solving. The helicopter crew, tactical officer, and ground teams worked together seamlessly to bring someone home safe.

The incident also sparked an important reminder from police about outdoor safety. Winthrop encouraged hikers to stick to marked trails, tell someone their plans before heading out, and pack enough food and water for their journey.

In a country famous for its stunning but sometimes unforgiving wilderness, this rescue shows how prepared emergency services are to help when adventure takes an unexpected turn.
