Louisiana Agents Rescue Hunters Stuck in Frozen Red River

When two duck hunters became trapped in freezing mud on Louisiana's Red River during a brutal winter storm, wildlife agents braved dangerous conditions to bring them home safely.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents in Bossier Parish responded immediately after receiving word that hunters were stuck in shallow water and mud. With freezing rain falling and temperatures dropping into the mid-twenties, time was critical.

The agents navigated treacherous conditions to reach the stranded hunters on the Red River. After making contact, they successfully pulled both hunters from the frigid water and mud, then transported them back to the boat launch.

Both hunters made it out without needing medical attention. But with those brutal conditions, the outcome could have been tragically different without the quick response.

This marks the second winter rescue in just one week for LDWF officers. Days earlier, agents helped save four boaters who had been completely immersed in the frigid waters of Bayou Cocodrie near Ferriday, Louisiana.

Wildlife enforcement officers often work behind the scenes, but their role as first responders is just as vital as any other emergency service. They patrol remote waterways where cell service is spotty and help is far away.

While linemen restore power and police clear icy roads, these agents are out on frozen rivers and bayous making sure outdoor enthusiasts make it home. They know the waters, they know the risks, and they show up when seconds count.

The hunters' families got to hug them that night because someone was ready to answer the call.
