Louisiana Law Could Open Surgery Access for Obesity Patients

Thousands of Americans with severe obesity need life-changing surgeries but can't get them, and researchers at LSU Pennington Biomedical just uncovered why.

Despite rising obesity rates nationwide, people with extreme obesity are receiving fewer surgical procedures than ever before. These aren't cosmetic operations but essential health interventions like knee replacements, hip surgeries, and heart procedures.

Dr. Vance Albaugh, senior author of the study, explains the cruel paradox. Severe obesity often creates the very health problems requiring surgery, yet that same obesity prevents patients from accessing those operations.

The barrier isn't medical necessity. It's insurance coverage.

Many health plans refuse to cover bariatric surgeries or GLP-1 medications that enable significant weight loss. Patients find themselves trapped: too heavy to qualify for needed surgeries, yet unable to afford the weight loss treatments that would make those surgeries possible.

Louisiana took action in 2024 when the state legislature and Governor Landry passed a law requiring commercial health insurance plans to cover bariatric surgery. The legislation was designed to break this harmful cycle and give patients access to the tools they need.

The law should have taken effect in January 2025, but implementation has stalled. Albaugh notes the urgent need for action, especially in Louisiana where obesity rates remain high.
