Louisville's Free Tax Help Marks 25 Years, $11M Impact

A quarter-century of free tax help has returned millions of dollars to Louisville families who need it most.

Since 2001, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has quietly transformed tax season for thousands of Louisville residents. Trained volunteers have prepared nearly 165,000 tax returns, helping families claim refunds that often cover rent, utilities, and groceries.

Last year alone, these dedicated volunteers prepared more than 8,400 returns. The impact? An estimated $11 million flowing directly back into local families' bank accounts.

"Louisville's VITA program has been a cornerstone of financial empowerment for 25 years," Mayor Craig Greenberg said. The program offers more than just free filing—it's IRS-certified preparation that ensures families don't miss out on crucial tax credits.

This tax season, 16 VITA sites across Louisville are open for business. Anyone who earned up to $70,000 in 2025 qualifies for free electronic filing and expert help navigating important credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

Those credits can mean the difference between struggling to pay bills and having breathing room in the budget. Many eligible families leave money on the table simply because tax preparation feels too complicated or expensive.
