Maggie Gyllenhaal Gives Silent Bride Her Voice in New Film

When director Maggie Gyllenhaal saw a tattoo of the Bride of Frankenstein and went back to watch the 1935 classic, she discovered something troubling. The movie's title character appears for barely five minutes and never speaks a word.

"It's called the Bride of Frankenstein, but it's really Frankenstein," Gyllenhaal told Entertainment Weekly. "So, who is she?"

That question inspired Gyllenhaal's new film "The Bride!" starring Jessie Buckley as the reimagined character. Set in 1930s Chicago, the movie picks up where the 1935 film left off, following the Bride and Frank (Christian Bale) as they become partners who spark radical social change.

The original Bride of Frankenstein almost didn't happen at all. Director James Whale had already achieved massive success with 1931's Frankenstein and worried he'd "squeezed the idea dry." He wanted to direct different genres and avoid being typecast.

Universal Pictures convinced him by offering a deal: for every horror film he made, he could direct one picture of his choosing. Whale accepted and brought his complete creative vision to the sequel, including the Bride's now-iconic hairstyle designed by costume head Vera West.
