Mahindra Offers Refunds to Batman EV Buyers After Backlash
When Indian automaker Mahindra tripled production of its limited-edition Batman electric SUV, original buyers felt betrayed. Now the company is making it right with full refunds.
After promising only 300 units of its Batman-themed electric SUV would ever exist, Mahindra just learned an important lesson about keeping promises to customers.
The Indian automaker launched the BE 6 Batman Edition last August, a sleek electric vehicle dripping with Dark Knight details from Christopher Nolan's iconic trilogy. With satin black paint, golden accents, and Bat emblems on everything from the brake calipers to the puddle lights, all 300 units sold out almost immediately.
That's when Mahindra made a choice that would come back to haunt them. Seeing the demand, they announced 699 more "limited edition" Batman EVs would roll off the production line, bringing the total to 999 vehicles.
The original 300 buyers were furious. They'd paid nearly $30,000 believing they owned one of just 300 collector's items, and suddenly their exclusive purchase wasn't so exclusive anymore.

Mahindra heard the outcry loud and clear. Between March 18 and April 17, any first-batch buyer can sell their BE 6 back to the company for a full refund of the original $29,900 price tag.
It's a generous offer, but here's the twist. Some of those original Batman EVs have already resold for as much as $48,500 on the secondary market, thanks to their genuine scarcity.
The Bright Side
This story shows what happens when companies actually listen to their customers. Mahindra could have ignored the complaints and kept the extra revenue from nearly 700 additional sales. Instead, they chose to honor the spirit of what they'd promised, even though it means potential losses.
The BE 6 itself represents real progress in electric vehicles. With a 79 kWh battery delivering 340 miles of range and 282 horsepower, it proves EVs can be both practical and playful. The fact that it sold out twice over shows growing enthusiasm for electric transportation in India, one of the world's largest emerging markets.
Whether first-batch buyers take the refund or keep their now-genuinely-rare collector's items, Mahindra turned a PR crisis into a trust-building moment.
