Maine Approves 800MW Wind Farm and New Northern Power Line

Northern Maine is about to become a renewable energy powerhouse, ending decades of isolation from the regional electrical grid.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission approved plans Tuesday for an 800-megawatt wind farm and new transmission line connecting Aroostook and Washington counties to the rest of New England. The project promises 2,500 construction jobs and $400 million in savings for Maine families over its lifetime.

For years, northern Maine's wind energy potential sat untapped because the region gets most of its power from Canada, not the New England grid. Without proper transmission lines, local renewable energy had nowhere to go.

The commission tried solving this in 2021 but abandoned the effort in 2023 without signing any deals. This time, they brought help.

Maine partnered with Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont to share infrastructure costs across all five states. The collaboration worked so well that Maine will pay less than 11% of the transmission line costs.

Avangrid will build the transmission line using existing corridors to minimize disruption. Clearway Energy Group will construct the wind farm, which will generate 600 megawatts specifically for Maine customers.

The Ripple Effect

The timing couldn't be better for local economies. Aroostook County already hosts successful wind projects in Mars Hill and Oakfield that have boosted community revenues through property taxes and local investment.

Northern Maine's windiest months align perfectly with winter, when heating costs spike and the region relies heavily on expensive oil because of natural gas shortages. Once operational, the wind farm will cut oil use by more than 10%, lowering both emissions and energy bills.

The projects will generate more than $2.4 billion in total economic output. Beyond construction jobs, the development brings ongoing property tax revenue and infrastructure improvements to rural communities that have long waited for economic opportunities.

Governor Janet Mills called it a historic chance to make Maine's energy resources work for residents while strengthening grid reliability and reducing exposure to volatile energy prices.

The commission plans additional proposals to use the remaining 400 megawatts of transmission capacity. Five states just proved that working together on clean energy isn't just possible, it's profitable for everyone involved.
