Maine Doctor Offers 3-Year Glaucoma Implant
A tiny implant no wider than a hair can now free glaucoma patients from daily eyedrops for three full years. Maine patients can get this FDA-approved treatment right in Lewiston without traveling to Boston.
Imagine never forgetting your eye drops again because a device smaller than your fingertip does the work for you. That's now a reality for glaucoma patients in Maine.
Dr. Martin Whitaker at Riverside Eye Surgery Center in Lewiston just became the first doctor in Maine to offer iDose, a breakthrough implant that delivers three years of glaucoma medication. The device is barely as wide as a human hair.
"What we're treating here is glaucoma, which is a disease affecting the nerve that takes pictures from the eye back to the brain," Dr. Whitaker explains. "That nerve is sensitive to eye pressure, and the only treatment we know that helps preserve it is lowering that pressure."
Deborah Mason became Maine's first iDose patient. She knows the exhaustion of managing multiple daily medications well.
"I'm also a person that takes a lot of medications every day, and it always feels like when is the day when I don't feel like every day is revolving around something medical related?" Mason shared after her follow-up appointment.

The 20-minute procedure uses light anesthesia while patients stay awake. The tiny implant sits in the eye and slowly releases highly concentrated medication over three years.
The Ripple Effect
This isn't just about convenience. Many glaucoma patients struggle with the physical challenge of applying drops or simply forget doses, which can lead to vision loss.
By guaranteeing consistent medication delivery, the implant removes that risk entirely. Patients no longer face the daily reminder of their condition or the worry about missed treatments.
Mason appreciated staying local too. "To me, it's just so important that people know that Riverside is here, and you don't have to go to Boston," she said.
While Lewiston is the first in Maine, select offices across Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island also offer the procedure. Glaukos, the company behind iDose, is already developing the next generation that could last five to seven years.
Dr. Whitaker notes that while patients naturally feel nervous about eye procedures, they're mostly excited. "By doing this, we relieve the patients of the physical difficulty of taking drops and the inconvenience, and we guarantee that they get the treatment."
Three years of freedom from daily eye drops, delivered through a device you can't even see.
