Malaysia and Japan Partner on Bird's Nest Medicine Tech

A traditional Southeast Asian delicacy is about to become tomorrow's breakthrough medicine, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between Malaysia and Japan.

Malaysian biotech company Glyken Bio Products has joined forces with Japan's Ortho Group to transform bird's nest into therapeutic treatments for conditions like arthritis, bone injuries, and chronic wounds. The collaboration, valued at over $1 million in research funding, could generate up to $10 million in new medical products.

The timing couldn't be better. Both countries face rapidly aging populations struggling with joint pain, bone problems, and age-related diseases. Now they're combining Malaysian innovation with Japanese medical expertise to create solutions.

Glyken has developed a special nanopeptide technology that extracts healing compounds from bird's nest at a molecular level. These tiny particles can be developed into medicines and wellness products that target specific health problems. Ortho Group brings decades of experience blending Western medicine with preventative care and regenerative treatments.

The research will focus on real-world problems facing older adults: osteoarthritis that makes walking painful, bone defects that limit mobility, sports injuries that take too long to heal, and wounds that won't close properly. Clinical studies are already planned to test how effective these bird's nest-based treatments can be.

The Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation is supporting the partnership as part of the country's push to become a biotechnology leader. CEO Mohd Khairul Fidzal Abdul Razak says the project addresses shared healthcare challenges while creating high-value biotech jobs in Malaysia.

The Ripple Effect

This collaboration extends far beyond two countries. The partnership aims to establish a Malaysia-Japan Centre of Excellence for Therapeutic Medicine, training the next generation of biotech researchers and creating intellectual property that could benefit aging populations worldwide.

Glyken's founder Eric Shak says bringing Malaysian technology to Japan's healthcare market opens doors for similar partnerships across Asia. Meanwhile, Ortho Group's Dr. Hiroyasu Tomo hopes the collaboration becomes a model for extending healthy life expectancy globally.

The project follows Glyken's successful expansion into Japan after securing a distribution deal during Expo 2025 Osaka. That agreement already put Malaysian bird's nest products into Japanese homes. Now the companies are working together to put them into medicine cabinets and doctor's offices.
