But the innovation goes beyond just growing more fruit. Researchers developed a natural sweetener extracted from specific pineapple varieties that could replace sugar and stevia. The product came from collaboration between government scientists and industry partners.
The country is also investing in its next generation of farmers. Through the Pineapple Innovation Exhibition and Competition, 44 secondary schools entered projects teaching students to grow pineapples using special bag systems and turn crop waste into useful products. Ten finalist teams will compete in November.
